The Sub Driver 3.0: Small Wave Performance Redefined
The Sub Driver’s unique design, featuring a low tail rocker, curvy rail lines that form concave and vee out the back, offers an unmatched small wave performance. This combination has been a proven favorite for years, making it a staple in the quivers of both amateur and professional surfers. The Sub Driver OG and 2.0 models have long been go-to boards for WQS and Challenger Series competitors, earning their place as workhorse weapons in small wave conditions.
Originally made famous by Kolohe Andino during his rise through the amateur and QS ranks, the Sub Driver has been a trusted companion on his journey to over a decade on the World Tour. This model has become a long-time favorite among surfers of all skill levels, from everyday enthusiasts to top-tier competitors on both the East and West Coasts, offering a performance shortboard that shines even in less-than-ideal conditions.
Recent refinements over the past few years—including tweaks to the foil, bottom curves, outline, rails, and rocker—have been shaped by feedback from the surf community. The result is a board designed for the next generation of surfers, ready to tackle small wave contests with power and precision.
Surfers like Cole Houshmand and Kade Matson used the swallow tail Sub Driver to qualify for the World Tour, and riders like Michael Rodrigues, East Coast pro Michael Dunphy, and the OG Kolohe Andino continue to rely on them. With so much demand for the swallow tail version, it became clear that a new update was in order—the Sub Driver 3.0 (Swallow Tail) was born.
The 3.0 features a generously proportioned, performance-driven outline with the wide point shifted back, creating a subtle hip between the feet that transitions into a moderately wide swallow tail. The bottom design incorporates a deep single concave, maxing out between the feet and extending into double concave through the tail, where the rail line finishes with a distinct Vee behind the rear fin.
The swallow tail reduces surface area, enhancing grip, pivot, and drive while still retaining the necessary width for speed. The rail rocker mirrors the outline’s hip, providing a balanced fulcrum that enables effortless turning anywhere on the wave. This new design elevates the Sub Driver to a whole new level, making it a worthy successor to its previous iterations.
With its low, fast tail rocker combined with a moderate entry rocker, the Sub Driver 3.0 offers exceptional drive, quick bottom turns, and smooth cutbacks. Its wide outline, generous concave, and low tail rocker make it incredibly fast, while the set-back apex curve gives it the perfect blend of maneuverability and control.
The Sub Driver 3.0 is designed to be ridden 1-2 inches shorter and wider than the DRIVER 3.0 or 3.0 STUB, ensuring that it excels in small to average surf where other performance boards struggle. This is the ultimate small wave weapon for surfers seeking speed, agility, and a whole new level of performance.
