Snow Jackets & Ski Jackets Australia

A great snow jacket is the foundation of any mountain kit. It's the layer that keeps the weather out, manages your body temperature across a full day of riding, and takes the brunt of every fall, every chairlift, and every storm that rolls in off the mountain. Getting it right makes the difference between a comfortable day on the hill and one spent counting down the runs until you can get back inside.

The most important thing to look for is waterproofing and breathability working together. Waterproofing is measured in millimetres of hydrostatic head — the higher the number, the more water pressure the fabric can resist before it lets moisture through. A rating of 10,000mm is adequate for most conditions, while 20,000mm and above is suited to heavy snowfall and extended time in wet weather. Breathability is equally important; a jacket that keeps water out but traps heat and sweat inside will leave you just as uncomfortable. Look for taped seams, waterproof zips, and a quality DWR (durable water repellent) finish on the outer fabric.

Insulation comes in two main forms. Down insulation offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio and compresses easily for travel, but loses its insulating properties when wet. Synthetic insulation performs better in damp conditions and dries faster, making it a more practical choice for the variable weather common across Australian and New Zealand resorts. Shell jackets with no insulation give you the most versatility, allowing you to layer underneath based on the conditions.

Beyond the technical specs, fit and features matter. A jacket should allow full range of motion without excess fabric getting in the way. Powder skirts, helmet-compatible hoods, underarm vents, and internal pockets for goggles and passes are the details that separate a good jacket from a great one.
