Lakai was started in 1999 by Mike Carroll and Rick Howard — two Girl Skateboards partners who wanted a shoe company that skaters actually owned. The brand has stayed in that lane: suede cupsole and vulcanised shoes that hold up to skateboarding, without pretending to be a running brand.
