Both forgiving starter surfers. The North Shore is a hard-top Standard Core board with more volume and a cruise-control feel that holds a constant speed — the better choice if you'll ride it for a couple of seasons. The Takeoff is the softer, more forgiving option for absolute first-timers.

What size wake does it need?
Less than most. The low rocker and high volume mean it carries speed on a modest wave from a lightly weighted boat, which is exactly where a beginner is usually riding.
