Key Technical Features

• DuraShell Construction: Hyperlite's compression-moulded shell over an EPS core. Heel dents and knocks do not mark it the way they mark a hand-laid board, which matters on a board that gets shared around.
• Concave Center: A concave through the middle of the board for speed and control. On a hybrid it is the feature doing the most work — it gives the shape a line to hold.
• Tail Channels: Channels through the tail that add drive and hold. They are why a board this loose can still be leaned on through a committed turn without washing out.
• Drop In Center Fin: The new 2.9" drop-in centre fin sets up in seconds with no tools. In, and the Shim surfs. Out, and it skims. That is the whole hybrid argument in one part.

Why You'll Love It

Hyperlite's SKILL bar runs the Shim from the beginner end to only about a third of the way up, so treat it as a beginner-to-improver board despite the dealer book's any-quiver headline. That gap between the words and the graphic is worth knowing before you buy. The Push Meter reads 3/4 and the wave size is rated MED, so a mid-sized wake is enough. Who it isn't for: advanced riders after a serious skim board, who want the Storm or the Raven, or a serious surf board, who want the Moab. The Shim's job is helping you work out which one you are.

Both, and that is the point. Hyperlite badges the Shim as delivering skim and surf characteristics in one shape. The drop-in centre fin is the switch: in for surf-style drive, out for skim-style release.

Shim or Good Daze?
Same construction, same fin package, similar shape language. The Good Daze is Hyperlite's ladies and girls specific version and stops at 4'7". The Shim runs to 5'3", covering heavier riders and anyone wanting more float.

Is it a good first wakesurfer?
It is a good early one. Hyperlite's skill bar starts it right at the beginner end. If you are buying for someone who has never surfed a wake, the Landlock or Broadcast are more forgiving still and cost less.
