Your base layer is the most important piece of clothing you'll wear on the mountain. It sits against your skin, manages moisture, regulates temperature, and determines whether you're comfortable all day or cold and clammy by run three. Get this right and everything else falls into place.

Our thermals and layers collection spans everything from lightweight merino base layers through to heavyweight sherpa fleeces and packable down vests — from brands including Airblaster, Le Bent, Sherpa, Volcom, Oakley, O'Neill, and Beyond Medals.

One-Piece Base Layers — Airblaster Ninja Suits

The Airblaster Ninja Suit is the gold standard of snowboard base layers — a full one-piece design that eliminates the cold gap between your jacket and pants, keeps everything locked in place no matter how hard you ride, and layers seamlessly under any outerwear:

  • Airblaster Classic Ninja Suit (Mens, 2025) — 230g 4-way stretch AIR-TECH fabric. Full-length centre front zipper, 350° hip zip, 7-panel form-fitting hood with chin protector, thumb loops, YKK zippers throughout.
  • Airblaster Womens Merino Ninja Suit (2024) — Ultrafine 19-micron brushed Merino (55% merino wool / 37% nylon / 8% elastic + Tencel™ blend). Women's specific fit, 4-way stretch, 350° hip zip, 7-panel hood, thumb loops, waistband drawcord. Non-mulesed wool sourced from New Zealand and Australia.
  • Airblaster Womens Hoodless Ninja Suit (2025) — Wicking AIR-TECH fabric, 4-way stretch, 350° waist zip, stretch-stitched neck hole with chin protector, thumb loops.

Merino Wool Base Layers

Merino wool is the benchmark material for snow base layers — naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, odour-resistant, and soft enough to wear directly against skin all day:

  • Le Bent Mens Core Lightweight Crew (2023) — 200g Merino Wool & Rayon from Bamboo blend. Slim fit, 4-way stretch, flatlock stitching, UV50+. The lightest base layer in our range — ideal for high-output riding and warmer days.
  • Le Bent Mens Lightweight Crew (2023) — 200g Merino & Bamboo Rayon blend. Slim fit, 4-way stretch, flatlock stitching, UV50+.
  • Sherpa Merino Wool Long Sleeve Top — 100% Australian Merino Wool, 240 GSM. Snug fit, raglan sleeves, flat-locked seams, UV protection.
  • Sherpa Merino Wool Long Pant — 100% Australian Merino Wool, 240 GSM. Shape-retaining interlock knit, flat-locked seams, UV protection.

Sherpa Fleece & Mid-Layers

When you need more warmth than a base layer alone, reach for a sherpa fleece or technical mid-layer:

  • Volcom Nelson Sherpa Full Zip Fleece Jacket (Mens, 2026) — 270g Sherpa Fleece. Progressive baggy fit. Jersey-lined handwarmer pockets, zippered utility pockets, Lycra binding at cuffs and hem. Works as a mid-layer under a shell or standalone on milder days.
  • Volcom Snowdrift Vest (Mens, 2026) — 270g Sherpa Fleece. Sleeveless for core warmth without restricting arm movement.
  • Oakley Mountain Fire Sherpa Fleece — 100% Polyester full-zip sherpa. High collar, elastic cuffs, ripstop zip pocket, cinch hem.
  • Oakley TNP Ember Half Zip RC Fleece — 100% Polyester performance fit. Half zip, hidden zip side pockets, elastic binding at cuffs and hem.
  • O'Neill Glacier Plaid High Pile Superfleece Jacket — 75% Recycled Polyester high-pile superfleece. Standard relaxed fit, centre front snap closure.

Down & Knit Layers

  • Beyond Medals Packable Down Vest — Lightweight and compressible, packs into its own bag. Core warmth without bulk as a standalone or mid-layer.
  • Beyond Medals Jacquard Knit Sweater — 60% Recycled Cotton / 40% Recycled Polyester. Oversized fit, jacquard knitted artwork that won't fade or crack. The après-ski essential.

How to layer for skiing & snowboarding

  • Base layer — Worn next to skin. Merino wool for warmth and odour resistance; synthetic AIR-TECH for high-output riding. Avoid cotton — it absorbs moisture and stays wet.
  • Mid-layer — Traps body heat. Sherpa fleece for warmth and breathability; down vest for packable core insulation.
  • Outer layer — Your waterproof snow jacket and snow pants block wind, snow, and moisture. Don't forget gloves and snow socks to complete the kit.
  • GSM guide — 200g = lightweight, high-output days. 230–240g = all-mountain versatility. 270g+ = cold days and low-output riding.
