Mitts are warmer than gloves — full stop. When your fingers are together in a single compartment instead of separated, they share body heat and stay warmer for longer. If you run cold, ski or ride in genuinely cold conditions, or just want to maximise warmth on the mountain, mitts are the better choice over gloves.

The trade-off is dexterity — doing up bindings, adjusting goggles, or using your phone is harder in mitts than gloves. For most riders that's a worthwhile trade on cold days. Some mitts also come with a removable inner glove liner so you get the best of both worlds.

What to look for

  • Waterproofing — look for a waterproof insert (Gore-Tex or equivalent) or a high waterproof rating. Snow gets into everything and wet hands get cold fast.
  • Insulation — synthetic fill is warm even when wet and dries faster; down is warmer but loses insulation when damp
  • Wrist strap & leash — keeps your mitt attached if you take it off on the chairlift
  • Gauntlet vs short cuff — gauntlet mitts go over your jacket sleeve and keep snow out; short cuff fits under the sleeve and is easier to get on and off
