Boat Anchors Australia

A reliable anchor is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on any boat. Whether you're stopping for a swim at a favourite spot, waiting out a weather change, or holding position while the kids tube behind the boat, a good anchor keeps you exactly where you want to be and gives you confidence that the boat will still be there when you get back.

Choosing the right anchor comes down to the type of bottom you're anchoring in, the size and weight of your boat, and how you plan to use it. Fluke anchors — also known as Danforth anchors — are lightweight and compact, making them a popular choice for recreational boats and sandy or muddy bottoms where they can dig in and hold effectively. Plow and claw anchors offer better holding power across a wider range of bottom types, including weed and rock, and are a more versatile option for boats that move between different waterways. Mushroom anchors are suited to smaller vessels and calm conditions where a permanent or semi-permanent mooring is needed.

Anchor weight matters. A general rule of thumb is to use approximately 1kg of anchor weight per metre of boat length as a starting point, though this varies depending on conditions, current, and the holding power of the anchor design. In exposed or high-current areas, going heavier is always the safer choice.

Pairing your anchor with the right chain and rope rode is equally important. A length of chain between the anchor and the rope adds weight that helps the anchor lie flat and set correctly, while a quality nylon rope provides the stretch needed to absorb shock loads from wind and wave action.
