Snow pants are one of those things people underestimate until they're standing at the top of a run in wet, cold gear wondering why they didn't spend a bit more. A good pair keeps you dry, warm, and moving freely all day — and the difference between a $150 pair and a proper technical pant is massive once you're actually on the mountain.

What to look for

• Waterproof rating — anything 10,000mm+ is solid for Australian conditions; 20,000mm+ if you're riding in heavy snow or all day
• Taped seams — fully taped is the gold standard; critically taped covers the high-wear zones
• Insulation vs shell — insulated pants are warmer out of the box; shell pants give you more control over your layering
• Venting zips — underrated feature for those warm spring days at Falls Creek or Mt Buller
• Reinforced cuffs — saves your pants from getting chewed up by your boot edges
