Why You Need Snow Chains

Snow chains dramatically improve tyre grip on snow and ice by digging into the surface and reducing slippage. Even if you drive a 4WD or AWD, chains may still be required during heavy snowfalls or icy conditions.

In many resort areas, especially in Victoria and NSW, authorities conduct roadside checks—and you could be fined or turned away if you're not carrying suitable snow chains. More importantly, chains give you the confidence and control to handle steep, slick alpine roads safely.

How to Size Your Snow Chains

Choosing the correct size is crucial. Snow chains need to match your tyre size precisely for optimal performance and to avoid vehicle damage. You’ll find your tyre size on the side of your tyre, shown as something like 225/65R17.

How to Fit Your Snow Chains

Fitting chains used to be a hassle, but modern systems have made it much easier. Here’s how to do it in five quick steps:

Find a Safe Spot – Pull over in a flat, clear area away from traffic.
Lay Them Out – Untangle the chains and make sure nothing’s twisted.
Feed Behind the Tyre – Wrap the cable or chain behind the tyre and connect at the top.
Fasten the Chain – Clip the front part and let the tension system (especially easy on Auto-Trac and some König models) do its job.
Drive Forward Slightly – Then re-check the tension to ensure a snug fit.
