Jackets vs Shells: Choosing the Right Snow Gear

Hey guys, Chris from Welcome Board Store here. Today we're going to talk about jackets and pants and what you need to consider when choosing these. You might think you need a big, thick, warm jacket for the snow, but what's with those thin jackets in the store? These are called technical jackets. Essentially, you have the choice between insulated jackets, which are thicker and have more insulation, and more technical options like this Volcom jacket, which is Gore-Tex, also known as a shell.

With shell jackets, it's all about layering. You can add thermals and fleeces underneath to stay warm, and if it gets hot, you can simply remove layers. On the other hand, insulated jackets keep you warm but offer less flexibility if you get too hot—your only option is to unzip. For layering, I recommend starting with a merino wool top, followed by a fleece. Avoid cotton as it retains moisture, sticks to your skin, and makes you cold. Merino wool and fleece wick moisture away, keeping you dry and warm.

When it comes to waterproofing, Gore-Tex is your best bet. Volcom offers great features like Zip Tech, which allows you to zip jackets and pants together, creating a one-piece suit that keeps snow out. This feature is especially popular for powder conditions. We have a wide range of Gore-Tex jackets and pants, including two-layer and three-layer options, as well as more budget-friendly options like 10k and 20k-rated jackets. There's something for everyone here!
